Born in 1950
In 1973, graduated from economics department of Nihon University School of Commerce
In the same year, joined Sasashin Co., Ltd. (Kyoto City)
In 1975,joined Saotome Dyeing Factory
In 1977,Acquired a national certification second grade staining professional
In 1989,National Komon Yuzen dyeing competition technology prize
In the same year,Traditional crafts successor commendation from Tokyo Governor
In 1995,Certified as a national designated traditional craftsman

Q.Could you tell me how you started this work?

Mr.Saotome:I was playing with craftsmen from a young age and I felt somehow fun. Though I started this work smoothly.

Q.When did you decide on it?

Mr.Saotome:My father said that when I went to a junior high school course guidance interview, I said that I will succeed the trace.

Q.Have you been helping from a young age?

Mr.Saotome:When I was young I just played with resident craftsman, I did not do any help, but I learned various things by looking at it.

Q.Where did you practice your training?

Mr.Saotome:Only two years after graduating from university, I trained at a dye store in Kyoto.

Q.What kind of person was your father?

Mr.Saotome:My father served as the president of the union and he always seemed to be busy.My father was short-tempered and scary.He was kind to the children, but it was really hard for the craftsman.He was teaching how tough, old-fashioned.

Q.What kind of products did you deal with at that time?

Mr.Saotome:Regarding that, it still remains unchanged, but it is something called "tailor-made" or "rolled sample".

Q.Could you tell us the greatest charm of Tokyo Fine-Patterned Dyeing?

Mr.Saotome:The attraction of Tokyo Fine-Patterned Dyeing is that it is astringent and it is not too flashy.Recently, various colors are used, and I think that it is interesting.I feel the charm of creating something in this work.

Q.Is there anything you would like to try on in the future?

Mr.Saotome:There are lots of things, but ... well, I would like to continue working on the kimono that is my main job for a long time.
