Polished in Edo and Western techniques
~History engraved in glass and sparkle~

The technique of applying a cut to the glass and patterning it is old, dating back to Sasania Persia (226 to 651), but it is said that this technique was conveyed to Japan in the Edo period .

Since then, the technique has been handed down generously by Edo craftsmen without discontinuation, and as new technologies develop, new designs have been created one by one, so Edo Kiriko is to establish a position as a contemporary craft with diversity I will do.

As representative technology, "Golden Red" developed in Satsuma of the Edo period can be mentioned. I used gold to color red, so it came to be called so. Furniture craftsmen have become more and more expressive by gold red.

However, unfortunately the stones of gold red manufactured in the Edo era have not yet been discovered and are called "phantom gold red". By the way, the red that developed color using copper is called "red", and it seems that there are not a few things that exist.

The minds of craftsmen inherited beyond time

The founder of Edo Kiriko is Kagaya Kyubei (real name: Fumijiro Minagawa).
Initially, Watamiro who worked at a glass wholesaler Kagaya in Nihonbashi departed to Osaka in search of technology, and he apprenticed to Izumiya Kayei.

In 1834, Wadijiro who went on to acquire Biedro's technique in Osaka returned to Edo, allowed to divide the curtain from Kagaya, afterwards he named him Kagaya Kyubei. And Kyubei developed the technique of Edo Kiriko using the stone of wooden stone and wood based on the technology learned in Osaka.

Meanwhile, in Satsuma, full-scale glass production is started in 1846 by inviting four Kamejiro from Kagaya in Edo. This is the beginning of Satsuma Kiriko.
Shigeru Shimazu actively promoted technology development as a lord, and succeeded in producing dark red with copper powder and bright red with gold powder, and Satsuma Kiriko will reach the prosperous season.

After that, the technology of Satsuma Kiriko had ceased due to the confusion of the end of Edo period, but at this time the craftsmen of Satsuma Kiriko who had flown to Edo, is the technique of red glass and coloring (Iroki) technique.
Edo Kiriko until this time was mostly simple things only to apply facets to colorless and transparent glass, but by obtaining colorful expression technique of Satsuma Kiriko, Edo Kiriko will achieve further development .

Difference between Edo Kiriko and Satsuma Kiriko
What is "blur" caused by the thickness of the glass

Satsuma Kiriko is based on the medicinal bottle for the pharmaceutical business which was led by Shimazu family who was the lord. For that reason, there are many things that are somewhat thick and durable, and this structural feature has created the "blurring" technique from coloring to colorless, which is the greatest feature of Satsuma Kiriko.
After that, Satsuma Kiriko is more likely to play a role as a government-sponsored gift, and it will become a combination of artistic elements.

Edo Kiriko on the other hand was made with the purpose of using ordinary people as daily goods, so the glass was mainly thin and small.
It is said that Edo Kiriko is a culture of the common people whose patterns and uses have developed together with the lives of ordinary people.
